Solar systems are usually described as grid-tied, hybrid or off-grid. The difference comes down to how — and whether — the system works with the utility grid and a battery.

A grid-tied system has no battery. It uses solar power as it is produced and draws from the grid when it needs more. It is typically the simplest and most affordable option, but because it relies on the grid, it will not keep the lights on during an outage.

A hybrid system adds a battery. Solar charges the battery during the day, and stored energy is available in the evening or during an outage. This is a popular choice where grid reliability is a concern, because it combines everyday savings with backup resilience.

An off-grid system runs entirely on its own — solar and batteries, with no utility connection at all. It offers full independence but must be sized carefully to cover every need in all conditions, which usually makes it the most involved and considered option.

There is no single “best” configuration. The right answer depends on your goals: lowering running costs, staying powered through outages, or full independence — and on the realities of your property and budget. That conversation is where a good project starts.
